Mountsorrel's monument includes a market cross rotunda on the south side of Market Place. Listed as Grade II, the cross is primarily late 18th century and takes the form of an open-sided peristyle structure with a final. There is a stone flagged floor beneath the cross and a slightly raised circular platform with a diameter of approximately 6.5m.
Edward I was granted a charter to hold a market at Mountsorrel in 1292, according to documents. In the late 18th century, Sir John Danvers moved the original market cross from Mountsorrel to Swithland Park, approximately 3km south-west of Mountsorrel. The current structure, designed by William Thomas, was built in its place ca. 1793.
Eight Doric columns support the entablature on stone pads. Sandstone blocks are used for these columns, which have been reinforced with iron ties in certain places. The domed roof is clad in lead with plastered interior and topped with a stone vase-shaped finial.
The Buttermarket has been a landmark of the village of Mountsorrel, Loughborough for decades, appearing on postcards, book covers, Parish Council literature and on the new library window.
